Wiek, A.: The Wiehltalbridge Accident
The truck burns out under the bridge
Germany, NRW, bridge of Wiehltal, in August 2004. A burning tanker with 32000 litres of fuel falls from the bridge next to houses, explodes and burns out. On the bridge there are a totally damaged car – a BMW – and pieces of vehicles. Under it, there is a totally burned out tanker. The crash barriers cannot prop up the tanker. The fire destroys the bridge in a way it has to be closed because of missing weight-bearing capacity. It is the most expensive accident in Germany. The driver of the BMW drives the car without a driving licence, the car has defects and the driver drives the car although he has taken drugs. An expert comes to investigate the accident, further investigations follow. Five experts try to find out the cause and the effect. They all have different opinions. It is complicated especially, because the taking down details of the accident is not in a way it should be. But this is the basis of the work as an investigator.
